Dearborn, MI - Junior Jamiel Strickland had 19 points to lead the men's basketball team to their first victory of the season, a 54-45 win over the visiting Adrian College Bulldogs. The Wolverines (1-7, 0-4) started out strong building a 12-2 lead early in the first half capped off by freshman Marcus Tillmon-Cornet's three pointer. Michigan-Dearborn would get the lead to 12 in the first half, but the Bulldogs (1-5) cut the lead to 9 at halftime.
In the second half, the Wolverines would still lead comfortably for the first seven minutes, but then Adrian made a run. The Bulldogs cut the lead three times to just three points, with the last occuring with three and half minutes left in the game. A clutch jumper by senior Dustin Sielski got the lead back to five, but an Adrian free throw got them within four points. Great free throw shooting by the Wolverines sealed the victory. Michigan-Dearborn made 7 of 8 free throws in the last one minute and fifteen seconds of the game to give them their first win of the season. For the game, the Wolverines shot 79% from the free throw line. Defensively Michigan-Dearborn played outstanding holding Adrian to 27% shooting for the game including 0-13 from behind the three-point arc. Tilmon-Cornet had 10 points while freshman Gage Throgmorton chipped in with 8 points.
The men's basketball team will look to make it two wins in a row on Wednesday as they host the Marygrove College Mustangs at 7:30pm in a WHAC contest.
