Grand Rapids, MI - After a rough start to the conference season, the softball team bounced back after losing the first game to Aquinas 9-1 to win game two of the doubleheader 5-3. Aquinas College (11-10, 3-3) would score in the bottom of the first after freshman Paige Altherr walked Sadie Stowell. Sowell then advanced to second base on a passed ball and would score on Emily Corning's double. Michigan-Dearborn (12-16, 1-3) would strike with three runs in the top of third inning.
After sophomore Mackenzie Trowbridge singled senior Michelle Hollister followed with a single and then stole second base, which led to senior Haleigh Horvath singling in both runs. Horvath would end up on second base when the right fielder could not handle the ball cleanly. Junior Lindsay Taylor would single and score junior Brittany Webb who pinch-ran for Horvath. Aquinas would answer with a run in the bottom of the third making the score 3-2. The Wolverines would score single runs in the fourth inning on a Hollister single and then in the seventh inning on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Taylor Moceri. Aquinas score once in the sixth inning, but none in the seventh after the first two batters reached base. With two runners on, Head Coach Scott Combs went to the bullpen and summoned sophomore Abby Jewel into the game. Jewel retired the only three batters she faced stranding both runners and preserving the 5-3 win for the Wolverines. Hollister continued to hit the ball well as she had three hits, while Trowbridge, Horvath, and sophomore Val Bertani each added two hits.
The Wolverines hope to continue their winning ways as they host the Indiana Tech Warriors this Saturday, April 12th, at 1:00pm at Ladywood High School.
