Dearborn, MI - The University of Michigan-Dearborn Wrestling Club traveled next door to Henry Ford College for an Individual tournament called Fall Brawl. All teams in the Great Lakes Conference (Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin) were invited. Michigan-Dearborn entered 7 wrestlers and 3 placed. 149 pounder- Tommy Herrmann (Canton/Catholic Central) took 4th place. 197 pounder- Scott Grishaber (Ypsilanti/Lincoln) took 2nd place. 285 pounder- Victor Nitos (Harrison Township/L'Anse Creuse) took 1st place.
"I'm proud of Victor. He is the first-ever 4-year wrestler for Michigan-Dearborn's wrestling club. Every year has been a challenge for Victor because he juggled a vigorous schedule between ROTC as well as a difficult class load which demanded time away from practice and competition. Victor Nitos is proof that hard work does pay off," said Coach Grant MacKenzie. Tommy Herrmann wrestled in one of the toughest weight divisions on Sunday. His first match was against #1 nationally ranked Zach Vatalare (U of M) and suffered a 3-0 loss. "That match was intense. Tommy made a mistake and his opponent took the lead and kept it. I'm sure Tommy wants a re-match," stated MacKenzie. Tommy Herrmann pinned a very tough Jake Sobeck (GVSU) in the 1st period and pinned Michael Bruns (BGSU) in the 1st period before losing to #8 national ranked Markus Cruz (U Toledo) 6-4. "I expect big wins from Tommy as the season progresses," said MacKenzie. Scott Grishaber pinned Dan Tomasello (GVSU) in the 2nd period and pinned Matt Wisniewski (MSU) in the 3rd period before losing to Kyle Slade (OSU) in the finals. "Scott sets high expectations for himself in the classroom and on the mat. I expect big wins from Scott as well as the season progresses," said MacKenzie. The University of Michigan-Dearborn will compete next on Saturday, November 7th at Heidelberg University.
