DETROIT - The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball team gave Wayne State University all it could handle in an exhibition game Sunday at the Matthaei Center in Detroit. The Wolverines held a six-point lead in the second quarter over the NCAA Division II program before the Warriors rebounded in the second half.
WSU used a 17-0 run starting in the third to overcome a strong effort from UM-Dearborn. Wayne State held on for a 67-43 win, outscoring the Wolverines 32-14 in the second half.
Natalie Spala (SO/Livonia, MI) capped off the Wolverine's offensive outburst in the first half with a 3-pointer with 4:51 to go in the second quarter, forcing a Warrior timeout. Jeorgia Jones (FR/Detroit MI) led the Wolverines with a perfect 5-of-5 shooting performance in the first half, scoring 12 of her team-high 14 points before the break.
Jones finished 6-of-11 from the field, adding seven rebounds off the bench. Arryn Dochenetz (SO/Livonia, MI) also came off the bench to score seven points, while Spala finished with six points and a team-high 11 rebounds, including four on the offensive glass.
The Wolverines shot 16-of-69 from the field, 4-of-27 from deep and 7-of-13 from the free-throw line. UM-Dearborn finished with seven assists and 19 turnovers.
The Wolverines return to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action against the University of Northwestern Ohio at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Lima, Ohio.
