GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Aquinas College outscored the University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball team 48-15 in the second half after the teams were tied at the break in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday in Grand Rapids, Mich.
After a strong first half, the Wolverines failed to get going in the final 20 minutes as the Bulldogs cruised to a 74-41 win. The loss drops UM-Dearborn to 4-16 overall and 1-11 in the WHAC.
After shooting 37 percent in the first half, the Wolverines closed the game at 29 percent from the field and under 25 percent from deep.
Natalie Spala (SO/Livonia, MI) was the lone UM-Dearborn player to finish in double figures, going 4-of-6 from the field, while adding a team-high five rebounds. Megan Swick (JR/Grosse Ile, Mich.) added eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
The Wolverines shot 14-of-48 from the field, 5-of-21 from deep and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line, while finishing with 10 assists and 14 turnovers.
Bri Spica hit five-3-pointers for Aquinas, racking up a game-high 21 points, while Hannah Brefeld added 15 points. The Bulldogs shot 25-of-56 from the field, 10-of-25 from behind the 3-point line and 14-of-25 on free throws. Aquinas doubled up UM-Dearborn on the glass 47-23.
UM-Dearborn returns home to take on Lourdes University at 1 p.m. Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse. Following the game there will be a ceremony to dedicate the new hardwood floor in the Fieldhouse.
