FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In a game where both teams shot above 50 percent from the field, the University of Michigan-Dearborn men's basketball team was outlasted by Indiana Tech in a critical Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The Wolverines (RV) withstood a 3-point barrage from the No. 18 Warriors to take a late lead, but 37 points from Miles Robinson was too much in the end as UM-Dearborn saw its five-game win streak snapped in an 89-84 loss. The Wolverines drop to 16-8 overall and 10-6 in the WHAC.
UM-Dearborn trailed by just two points at the half, but Indiana Tech caught fire from the outside early in the second half with three 3-pointers in the first three minutes after the break. UM-Dearborn kept pace and battled back from a seven-point deficit to take an 81-80 lead with 2:20 to play on a 3-pointer from Xavier Crofford (SO/Detroit, MI).
UM-Dearborn sent Jeff Cain (SR/Lansing, MI ) to the line with 1:27 on the clock and a chance to go up three, but he missed the front end of a one-and-one, opening the door for Indiana Tech. A put-back layup for Lavonte Davis gave the Warriors back the lead and the home team iced the game with four late free throws from Robinson.
Five Wolverines scored in double figures, led by Cain with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Marcus Williams (SR/Lagos, Nigeria) scored 16 points, while adding six rebounds and six assists, while Cody Kegley (FR/Yale, MI) came off the bench to add 15 points, hitting three 3-pointers. Crofford chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds.
Jason Penn (JR/Detroit, MI) continued his march to 1,000-career points, scoring 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while adding 11 rebounds for a double-double. Penn is eight points shy of 1,000.
The Wolverines shot 32-of-58 from the field, 10-of-20 from deep and 10-of-13 from the line, while outrebounding the Warriors 31-27. UM-Dearborn totaled 17 assists compared to just six turnovers.
Robinson was 12-of-19 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the line, while hitting five 3-pointers for the Warriors. Tanner Watkins added 19 points for Indiana Tech, which shot 33-of-62 from the field, 14-of-23 from behind the 3-point line and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line.
