BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's lacrosse team opened its first full NAIA season with a dramatic overtime win over St. Ambrose University Sunday at the Detroit Country Day Fieldhouse in Beverly Hills, Mich.
The Wolverines and Fighting Bees went back and forth throughout, as regulation ended with the score tied 6-6. UM-Dearborn possessed the entire overtime session and with under two minutes remaining in extra time, freshman James Hatch (FR/Pasadena, Calif.) netted his third tally of the contest to give the Wolverines (1-0) a 7-6 win.
The game was tight throughout, with neither team able to gain more than a one-goal advantage. UM-Dearborn battled through and showed its toughness, winning the ground ball battle 48-30, while the Fighting Bees edged the Wolverines in faceoffs 11-6.
The scoring started with Mitchell Stapleton (JR/Detroit, Mich.) putting UM-Dearborn up 1-0 less than a minute in, while Hatch made it 2-1 later in the first quarter. SAU got two goals to end the first up 3-2, while UM-Dearborn netted three in the second to hold a 5-4 lead at the half. Stapleton and Hatch each scored in the second, joined by Alex Gjokaj (SO/Macomb, Mich.).
The Wolverines led 6-5 after the third as Devon Callaghan (SO/Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) got his first goal for UM-Dearborn. The game was tied early in the fourth when SAU's Sean Pendergast found the back of the net for the second time. The score remained locked at 6-6 through regulation despite several chances for both sides late, setting up Hatch's heroics.
The Wolverines took 42 shots, putting 22 on cage, while converting on 18 clears. Jon Chaffee (FR/Hartland, Mich.) made eight saves in the win for the Wolverines in his first career start. Matthew Rosteck (JR/Commerce Township, Mich.) had the lone assist in the game for the Wolverines.
