GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's lacrosse team shut down the offense of Robert Morris University-Illinois in the second half of a nonconference win Saturday at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The Wolverines (RV) dominated the first quarter, but the Eagles rallied to cut the UM-Dearborn lead to 6-4 at the halftime break. The second half was all Wolverines, who outscored RMU 9-1 in the final 30 minutes to secure a 14-5, stopping a two-game skid. The win pushes the Wolverines to 5-3 on the season overall.
James Hatch (FR/Pasadena, Calif.) led the Wolverine offense with five goals on 14 shots, while adding an assist. Devon Callaghan (SO/Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) added three goals on 12 shots and an assist. Hatch and Callaghan are now tied for the team lead in goals with 25 each through eight games. Alex Gjokaj (SO/Macomb, Mich.) scored a pair of goals, while Matthew Rosteck (JR/Commerce Township, Mich.), Micah Rinke (FR/Plymouth, Mich.), Mitchell Stapleton (JR/Detroit, Mich.) and Ben Phillips (FR/Plymouth, Mich.) each found the back of the net once. Rosteck finished with a pair of assists.
The Wolverine defense was led by goalie Liam Turner (FR/Ann Arbor, Mich.), who stopped eight of the 13 shots he faced, including some point-blank attempts from the Eagles late in the contest. Lucas Laforge (FR/Hartland, Mich.) and Jake Harrison (SO/Walled Lake, Mich.) each recorded a team-high seven ground balls, while Stapleton and Callaghan added six. Harrison was strong on faceoffs, winning 17-of-20 draws.
The Wolverines outshot the Eagles 46-29, while winning the ground-ball battle 48-36.
UM-Dearborn returns to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action against No. 10 Siena Heights University at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Detroit Country Day Fieldhouse in Beverly Hills, Mich.
