ANN ARBOR, Mich. - For the first time this season, the University of Michigan-Dearborn played at Alumni Field in Ann Arbor, hosting Indiana Tech for a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.
The Wolverines used a power surge to sweep the Warriors with three home runs in each game. UM-Dearborn cruised to a 7-2 in the first game before taking the the finale 13-7. The sweep moves the Wolverines to 16-6-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the WHAC.
Game one started with Taylor Moceri (SR/Sterling Heights, MI) hitting a lead off home run in the first inning, her fourth of the season, while Kassidy Butler (SO/Parchment, MI) sent home two runs with the first of her three home runs on the day later in the inning. The Wolverines doubled their lead in the second inning with an RBI single from Sarah Prashad (SO/Mississauga, Ontario), while Butler hit her second two-run home run. Prashad added another RBI single in the fourth helping the Wolverines to 12 hits in the game.
Moceri, Butler and Prashad all finished with two hits. Gina Verduzco (JR/Portage, MI) (8-3) continued her dominant pitching, going 5.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out eight Warriors. Samantha Torongeau (FR/Shelby Township, MI) entered the game in relief, limiting Indiana Tech to three hits and one run.
The home run balls kept flying in the second game with each team hitting three, but the Wolverines were able to make their's count a bit more, led by a grand slam from Jordan Ewald (JR/Wixom, MI) in the first inning. The Wolverines extended their lead in the second inning when Butler once again found the other side of the fence, her seventh of the season, followed by Ewald's second of the game.
The game was put away in the third when Kylie Hill (SR/Adrian, MI) knocked in three with a double. Moceri, Ewald and Riley Hison (SO/Macomb Township, MI) each finished with two hits each, while Moceri and Butler each scored three times.
The Wolverines continue play in the WHAC against the University of Northwestern Ohio at 3 p.m. Sunday at Alumni Field.
