DEARBORN, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's and women's cross country teams get the 2017 season started with the Golden Grizzly Invite hosted by Oakland University at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Rochester, Mich.
Head Coach Joe Horka returns a large group from last year, while adding a strong recruiting class on both teams, giving the Wolverines more depth than any prior season in the program's history. UM-Dearborn's men's roster includes 14 student-athletes, with nine incoming freshmen, while the women's side will have 14 as well, with seven first-year participants.
Seniors Emily Eccelton, Catherine Miller and Megan Seccombe will be looked to as leaders for the women's team, while senior Sean Nowak (SR/Trenton, MI) is the lone upperclassman on the men's side, with the rest of the team made up of sophomores and freshmen.
The coaching staff returns Quinn Osgood and Mallory Nemeth as assistants, while former UM-Dearborn cross country runners Ryan Pickell and Megan McDonald join the crew this season as assistants, giving Horka four former Wolverines helping him lead the cross country programs in 2017.
Following the trip to OU on Friday, the Wolverines will be in action next at the Calvin Knight Invite hosted by Calvin College on Sept. 9. After the team's annual trip to East Lansing, Mich., for the Spartan Invitational on Sept. 15, UM-Dearborn heads outside the state of Michigan for the first time in 2017 for the Greater Louisville Classic hosted by the University of Louisville on Sept 30.
The Wolverines close out the regular season with a trip to Muskegon, Mich., on Oct. 13 for the Jayhawk Invite, followed by the NAIA Great Lakes Cross Country Challenge hosted by Aquinas College Oct. 21 in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The 2017 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championships are set for Nov. 4 in Grand Rapids, Mich.
