OLIVET, Mich. - One day after needing some late-game heroics to cap a win over Adrian College, the University of Michigan-Dearborn men's soccer team took control early and held on for a win over Olivet College Sunday in Olivet, Mich.
The Wolverines got an early goal from Mike Smith (SO/Southgate, MI) and another in the 25th minute from Tamer El-Gamal (FR/West Bloomfield, MI) to lead 2-0 at the half. After the Comets cut the UM-Dearborn lead in half, shortly following the break, Smith netted his second of the afternoon to secure the 3-1 win, moving the Wolverines to 3-1 on the season.
Smith scored the first goal of his college career, chipping a feed from Mohamad Anani (FR/Dearborn Heights, MI) over the Olivet goalkeeper to put the Wolverines on top 1-0 7:32 into the contest. El-Gamal extended the lead for the Wolverines, netting his first career goal on an assist from senior Ali Anani (SR/Dearborn Heights, MI).
Reece Burton got the Comets on the board with a goal just 2:27 into the second half to make it 2-1 in favor of UM-Dearborn, but Smith put the Wolverines back up two with his second goal of the game, again on a feed from Mohamad Anani.
The win in net went to freshman Stephen Mezuk (FR/Warren, MI), making his first career start for UM-Dearborn. He made eight saves, playing all 90 minutes.
The Wolverines were outshot 15-9 in the win, while taking five corner kicks to four from Olivet.
UM-Dearborn plays its final nonconference game before the start of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season with a contest against NAIA newcomer Cleary University at 3 p.m. Friday in Howell, Mich.
