DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn is proud to announce the hiring of Matt Cunningham as the new Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance and Internal Operations, the department announced Monday.
Cunningham, who has served as the head baseball coach for the past two years at UM-Dearborn, will take over in his new role effective immediately.
"I want to thank Director of Athletics Matt Beaudry and the search committee for this opportunity," Cunningham said. "It is an honor to represent our first-class institution and I look forward to the continued collaboration and growth of UM-Dearborn Athletics. The future of our University and the athletics department is bright, and I am excited to have an expanded role as we continue to ascend our position on a regional and national level."
Cunningham will be responsible for the administration of several UM-Dearborn athletic programs, compliance and rules monitoring for all UM-Dearborn student-athletes and coaches, as well as overseeing the internal functions for the department, including facilities.
As the head coach of the baseball program, Cunningham has led the Wolverines to a 5-2-1 start this season, the second in program history, and his team won the department Champions of Charity Award for its dedication to servant leadership in 2017-18. Cunningham was named the 2017-18 Acclaimed Staff Award winner, an honor given to one UM-Dearborn staff member each year at the annual All-Sports Banquet.
"We're very excited to welcome Matt Cunningham to the role of Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance and Internal Operations," Beaudry said. "His experiences and leadership will be valuable to staff, coaches, student-athletes and the campus community. Matt's extraordinary commitment, knowledge, and passion will help guide the present and future of UM-Dearborn Athletics."
Cunningham, a native of Chelsea, Mich., has held several positions in higher education in the past, including, most recently, as the Senior Major Gifts Officer for the Wayne State University Law School. Prior, he held positions at Wayne State as a Leadership Annual Giving Officer for the Law School and as a Development Director for the Department of Athletics.
In May 2016, Cunningham graduated with Juris Doctorate from Wayne State. He also graduated from Wayne State with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations, Cum Laude, in 2007 and with a Master of Arts in Education, Cum Laude, in 2009.
Most recently, Cunningham established his own law firm as a member of the State Bar of Michigan. He currently resides in Dearborn with his wife Kristi Cunningham, a former member of the UM-Dearborn volleyball team.
