Matt Cunningham enters his second year as the Assistant Athletics Director of Compliance and Internal Operations and third year as the head baseball coach.
Cunningham will be responsible for the administration of several UM-Dearborn athletic programs, compliance and rules monitoring for all UM-Dearborn student-athletes and coaches, as well as overseeing the internal functions for the department, including facilities.
Last season, Cunningham lead the UM-Dearborn Baseball team to a 19-24-1 overall record. Under Cunningham's leadership, the team produced four All-Academic players, three All-WHAC First-Team players, and one All-WHAC Second-Team honoree. These awards are highlighted by senior catcher Daniel Kerr being named to the 2019 CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-America NAIA Baseball Second Team, marking a first for the program.
Cunningham, a native of Chelsea, Mich., has held several positions in higher education, including, most recently, as the Senior Major Gifts Officer for the Wayne State University Law School. Prior, he held positions at Wayne State as a Leadership Annual Giving Officer for the Law School and as a Development Director for the Department of Athletics.
In May 2016, Cunningham graduated with Juris Doctorate from Wayne State. He also graduated from Wayne State with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations, Cum Laude, in 2007 and with a Master of Arts in Education, Cum Laude, in 2009.
He currently resides in Dearborn with his wife Kristi Cunningham, a former member of the UM-Dearborn volleyball team.
