DEARBORN, Mich. - The No. 10 University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team held off a late comeback attempt to earn a 4-3 victory over Indiana Tech in a Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference contest Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
UM-Dearborn led 4-1 in the third, but the Warriors scored twice to pull within one. Jordan Gilbert (FR/Grosse Ile, MI) made a flurry of saves in the final seconds secure the win for the Wolverines, who move to 19-4-2 on the season and a perfect 7-0-0 in the WHAC.
UM-Dearborn sits in first place in the league standings and has secured the No. 1 overall seed in the first-ever WHAC Postseason Tournament set for March 2-4 in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The Wolverines scored the first goal, as Tyler Groat (JR/Wyandotte, MI) found the back of the net late in the first period. After the Warriors tied the game early in the second, UM-Dearborn scored three straight, including goals from Groat, Billy Brock (FR/Woodhaven, MI) and Silas Johnson (FR/Calgary, Alberta, Canada).
Down by three, the Warriors continued to pressure the Wolverines in the third, eventually making it a one-goal game with the goalie pulled and 51 seconds on the clock. Despite a late flurry and a 40-36 shot advantage, the comeback fell short and the Wolverines prevailed.
Groat added an assist to go along with his two goals, while Brock finished with three points, including a goal and two assists. Glibert got the win for the Wolverines, stopping 37 shots and earning his third win of the season.
UM-Dearborn returns to action against Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League rival Oakland University. The first of the home-and-home will take place at 7:30 pm Friday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena. The game will be Senior Night for the Wolverines, as the team will honor three seniors in a ceremony preceding the game.
