DETROIT - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team split a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader with Lawrence Technological University Saturday at Buysse Field in Detroit.
The Wolverines hit three home runs in the opener and held on for a 7-4 win, while LTU scored four runs in the fifth inning of game two to take the finale 5-1. The split moves UM-Dearborn to 14-12 overall and 6-6 in the WHAC.
After a Meaghan Markus (FR/Mattawan, MI) RBI single to open the scoring in the first inning of game one for the Wolverines, Jordan Ewald (SR/Wixom, MI) hit a three-run home run to stretch the lead to 4-0. The home run was the 19th of Ewald's career moving her into a tie with Jessie Thueme for the UM-Dearborn career record.
Later in the first inning Kaylie McConnell (FR/Holland, MI) hit the first home run of her college career, while Markus did the same with a solo shot in the third inning. The Blue Devils scored one in the fourth and three more in the fifth to cut into the UM-Dearborn lead.
Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI) shut down LTU the rest of the way, earning her ninth win of the season. She tossed a complete game, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits, while walking two and striking out three.
In game two, the Wolverines were held to one hit through the first five innings, but rallied in the sixth, putting runners at second and third with one out, followed by a Verduzco RBI. The Blue Devils got out of the inning and went on for the victory.
Samantha Torongeau (SO/Shelby Township, MI) got the start for the Wolverines, going 4.2 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, while walking one and striking out two. Sarah Prashad (JR/Mississauga, Ontario) finished with two hits and a run scored.
The Wolverines return to action in a WHAC doubleheader against Indiana Tech at 1 pm Sunday in Fort Wayne, Ind.
