DEARBORN, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball team continued its strong late season play, closing the 2017-18 campaign with a third-straight win, topping Cornerstone University on Senior Night Wednesday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.
The Wolverines started the game strong, shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half and building a 42-37 lead at the break. UM-Dearborn got six points off the bench from Jeorgia Jones (SO/Detroit, MI) in the third quarter, building a 54-44 lead.
The Golden Eagles closed the third on a 12-0 run to take a two-point lead to the final 10 minutes. The teams went back and forth down the stretch and Cornerstone claimed a 65-64 lead with 2:23 to play after a 3-pointer from Mya Udell.
After defensive stops on both ends, senior Meredith Williams (SR/Novi, Mich.) hit her last shot as a Wolverine, making a jumper in transition with 1:21 to go, putting UM-Dearborn up for good. The 66-65 win closes the season for the Wolverines with a record of 9-20 overall and 4-16 in the WHAC.
During a pregame ceremony, the Wolverines honored six senior student-athletes including Bri Alspaugh (SR/St.Louis, MI), Olivia Hauser (SR/Redford, MI), Lauron Sanders (SR/Rochester, MI), Marisa Sauve (SR/Dearborn, MI), Megan Swick (SR/Grosse Ile, Mich.) and Williams.
Jones finished with 22 points off the bench for the Wolverines, adding 10 rebounds for a double-double. Sophomore Sade Lemons (SO/Sterling Heights, MI) closed her outstanding first year with the team, scoring 16 points and grabbing five rebounds. Junior Natalie Spala (JR/Livonia, MI) added 15 points, while Williams scored nine points and finished with five assists.
The Wolverines shot 30-of-72 from the field, 4-of-19 from deep and 2-of-2 at the line. UM-Dearborn won the rebounding battle 41-37.
The Golden Eagles were led by Shelby Nyboer with 13 points.
