Justin Popov enters his second season as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team.
Popov comes to UM-Dearborn after coaching girls Summer AAU basketball in Utica, Mich., for three years. He is also a well-recognized player development coach in both men’s and women’s basketball across the Metro Detroit area.
Popov was a two-time Class C First Team All-State basketball player at Harper Woods High School. He led the state of Michigan in scoring during his senior year in 2005. He attended Trine University in Angola, Ind., for one year and averaged 21 points in nine games a freshman before transferring to the University of Detroit Mercy for the rest of his college career.
Years later, Popov gained an NBA D-League Draft Camp invite and was later offered an opportunity to play professional basketball in the NBL Canada and NBA D-League.
A native of Hamtramck, Mich., Popov graduated from University of Detroit Mercy with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 2010. He is married and has one child.
