Second-Quarter Drought Costs UM-Dearborn in 54-49 Loss
The University of Michigan-Dearborn women’s basketball team erased much of a 13-point halftime deficit Saturday afternoon, but a two-point second quarter proved too much to overcome as UM-Dearborn fell 54-49 to Northwestern Ohio.
DEARBORN, Mich. -- The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball team battled back from a cold second quarter but ultimately fell 54-49 to the University of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday afternoon.
UM-Dearborn came out strong, edging Northwestern Ohio 17-16 after the first quarter. Tamia Tounsel set the tone early, attacking the rim and helping the Wolverines establish offensive rhythm despite tight defensive pressure.
The game turned in the second quarter. UM-Dearborn was held to just two points over the 10-minute stretch, allowing Northwestern Ohio to build a 32-19 halftime advantage. The Wolverines struggled to generate clean looks and were limited to one field goal attempt at the free-throw line during the decisive stretch.
Coming out of the locker room, UM-Dearborn showed resilience. The Wolverines outscored Northwestern Ohio 15-10 in the third quarter behind improved ball movement and perimeter shooting. Bailey Stimac knocked down three triples on the afternoon, while Lillian Golson provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, including two shots from beyond the arc.
The fourth quarter remained competitive, with UM-Dearborn matching Northwestern Ohio point-for-point (15-12 in the period). The Wolverines cut into the deficit but couldn't fully overcome the second-quarter drought.
Tounsel led UM-Dearborn with 13 points, while Stimac added 11. Nyla Hood filled the stat sheet with 11 rebounds and six assists, anchoring the Wolverines on the glass and facilitating the offense. Sydney Dixon contributed nine points and two steals.
Despite shooting 32.1 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range, UM-Dearborn was hurt by a 9-for-16 performance at the free-throw line and 15 turnovers. Northwestern Ohio capitalized at the stripe, converting 27 free throws, which proved to be the difference in a five-point contest.
