DEARBORN, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team scored three goals in the second period to defeat the Calvin College Knights 6-2 in a nonconference contest Thursday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
The No. 9 ranked Wolverines, as they have several times this season, used a strong second period to pull away.
Tyler Groat (JR/Wyandotte, MI) scored twice in the middle frame, one coming shorthanded, while Tyler Dalton (JR/Northfield, OH) added a goal and an assist to give the Wolverines a 4-1 lead after two. Calvin scored to cut the deficit to two before UM-Dearborn scored two more to close it out.
The victory improved the Wolverines record to 6-1-1 on the season.
Troy Saunders (JR/Canton, Mich.) got the scoring started with a goal in the first period to erase an early 1-0 Calvin lead, while adding an assist on Dalton's goal. Nic LaBurn (JR/Northville, MI) and Marcus McSweeney (SR/Chandler, Ariz.) each registered two assists. The third period goals for the Wolverines came from Silas Johnson (FR/Calgary, Alberta, Canada), the first of his career, and John Barlow (JR/Shelby Twp, MI). Jared Dedenbach (JR/Warren, MI) and Chase Best (FR/Plymouth, MI) each added an assist.
UM-Dearborn outshot The Knights 28-22. Thomas Proudlock (JR/Southgate, MI) recorded 20 saves in the winning effort. It was his third victory of the season. The Wolverines killed off all four power plays for and went 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
The Wolverines are in action again Saturday against Calvin College at 8 pm at the Eagles Ice Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.
