BYRON CENTER, Mich. -- In a closely contested battle at Southside Ice Arena, the University of Michigan-Dearbornmen's ice hockey team fell just short against the Aquinas Saints, losing 3-2 in a shootout on Friday (Oct. 25).
The game kicked off with solid momentum for the Wolverines. Brenden Paden found the net, scoring unassisted in the first period to give UM-Dearborn a 1-0 lead. However, the second period saw a reversal of fortunes, with Aquinas rallying back to score twice, leading 2-1 as they head into the final stanza. UM-Dearborn's Justin Renzi brought the game back to a tie in the third period after depositing an Ethan Marcola assist into the back of the net, revitalizing hopes of a Wolverines victory.
An overtime period was needed, but neither team could break the tie in the 3v3 portion. Aquinas' Austin Gilmore sent the home fans home happy as he beat Drew Adams in a shootout to give AQ the extra point. Despite the defeat, Wolverines' goalie Adams put up a solid performance with 22 saves. His counterpart, Randon Striplin from Aquinas, also showcased his skills, making 28 saves.
With this result, UM-Dearborn moves to a season record of four wins, four losses, and one overtime loss (4-4-1). The Wolverines look forward to regrouping and aiming for a win in their upcoming rematch against the Saints on Saturday (Oct. 26).
