Williams Homers, Wolverines Lose Two Against Cleary

HOWELL, Mich.Matthew Williams went 3-4 with a 3-run homer at Lake Trust Stadium on Sunday (Sept 18), the home of the Cleary University Cougars (2-0). However, the University of Michigan-Dearborn (0-2) baseball team dropped a pair against the Cougars, losing 10-4 and 13-7.


Game One

The Wolverines struck first in the top of the second when Robert Begley roped one to center to score Nathaniel Wandrie. The Cougars scored three in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. In the top of the 5th, Williams stepped up to the plate with two runners on and stroked one over the left field fence to retake a 4-3 lead. The Cougars would score seven unanswered runs to take game one 10-4. 


Jack Cronyn got the nod in game one throwing three innings of scoreless ball and punched out five Cougars on just 38 pitches. Tyler Troyer (0-1) got the loss in game one throwing two innings of relief work. 


Game Two

The Wolverine bats got to work early in game two as Christopher Cannon delivered a single to right to score James Forner. The Cougars tied it up in the bottom half before Matthew Balash delivered a 2 RBI single to left center to plate two runs and give the Wolverines a 3-1 lead. Balash was 3-4 in the contest with 2 RBIs. Cleary plated eight unanswered runs to take a 9-3 lead before the Wolverines chipped away in the fifth with a pair of runs on a Josh Flowers RBI single. Flowers would score the second run of the inning after working his way around the bases and scoring on a wild pitch to make it 9-5. The Wolverines tried to make a comeback in their final at-bats when Gavin Hollon roped a two-RBI single to right center to plate Cannon and Grant Ingersoll. However, the rally fell short as the Wolverines lost game two 13-7.


Begley opened the game for the Wolverines, working a scoreless inning and used just 14 pitches to do it. Josh DeChane was the pitcher of record falling to 0-1 on the season.
