LIMA, Ohio - One day after earning votes in the NAIA Top-25 Coaches Poll for the first time on record, the University of Michigan-Dearborn men's basketball team headed south to take on another of the top teams in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. The Wolverines battled the University of Northwestern Ohio in a close contest Wednesday in Lima, Ohio.
The Wolverines held a four-point lead late, but the Racers scored the final nine points of the game to take a 63-58 win. The loss drops UM-Dearborn to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in the WHAC.
Jeff Cain (SR/Lansing, MI ) led the Wolverines with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including three 3-pointers, while adding three rebounds and three steals. Jason Penn (JR/Detroit, MI) added 12 points, while Alex Hagel (SO/Macomb, MI) scored 11, hitting two shots from deep.Ashton Curd (JR/Detroit, MI) provided a team-high five assists off the bench.
The Wolverines struggled from the field, going 22-of-56 overall, 6-of-22 from deep and 8-of-9 from the line. UM-Dearborn finished with 13 assists and 12 turnovers, while being outrebounded 35-23.
UNOH saw a game-high 20 points from Sadeeq Bello, while Corbin Pierce added 12. The Racers were 22-of-52 from the field, 7-of-20 from deep and 12-of-16 from the free-throw line.
The Wolverines play a home game at Crisler Center against Siena Heights University at 10 a.m. Saturday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
