DETROIT - Senior forward Jason Penn (JR/Detroit, MI) broke through for a big game to lead the Wolverines to a crucial Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference win over Marygrove College Saturday in Detroit.
The Wolverines outlasted the Mustangs in a back-and-forth affair with several lead changes in the second half. An old-fashioned 3-point play with one minute to play from Penn secured the win for UM-Dearborn. The Wolverines are now 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the WHAC.
Penn led the Wolverines with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting, while adding five rebounds. Marcus Williams (SR/Lagos, Nigeria) added 21 points, including three 3-pointers. Xavier Crofford (SO/Detroit, MI) finished with 13 points and five rebounds in the win.
The Wolverines shot 30-of-61 from the field, 6-of-24 from deep and 15-of-19 from the line. UM-Dearborn finished with 12 assists and eight turnovers.
The Mustangs were led by TK Dixon with a game-high 28 points, including five 3-pointers. Marygrove shot 26-of 60 from the field, 12-of-25 from behind the 3-point line and 11-of-16 from the free-throw line.
The Wolverines continue WHAC play against Concordia University at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.
