DEARBORN, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's basketball team set for road contests at No. 8 Davenport University and Siena Heights University this week as the race for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference postseason tournament heats up.
This Week's Schedule
1/18/17: at No. 8 Davenport University at 7:30 p.m.
1/21/17: at Siena Heights University at 7:30 p.m.
The Wolverines picked up a pair of critical wins last week, including a road victory at Aquinas College to push the University of Michigan-Dearborn into fifth place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference standings. After a sluggish start to the contest, UM-Dearborn outscored the Saints 42-29 in the second half. Jason Penn (JR/Detroit, MI) led the Wolverines with 22 points on 11-of-13 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds, while Marcus Williams (SR/Lagos, Nigeria) added 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Williams added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Williams and Penn continued their strong play against Lourdes University, scoring 19 and 16, respectively.
The UM-Dearborn defense continues to get better with each game, moving near the top on the NAIA in several key categories. The Wolverines are ninth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 69.8 points per game. Getting to the rim has been difficult for opposing offenses, as UM-Dearborn is fifth in the nation in blocks with 4.6 per game, while the team is 14th in defensive rebounding, averaging 32.5 boards.
UM-Dearborn notched one of the biggest wins in program history earlier this season, knocking off then No. 3 Davenport 80-79 at the Fieldhouse.
Siena Heights spoiled a home game at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor for the Wolverines, as the Saints jumped out to an early lead and topped UM-Dearborn 65-58.
