Recap: UM-Dearborn Women’s Cross Country at Northwood Invite
The Wolverines opened up their season at the Northwood Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 6).
MIDLAND, Mich. -- The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's cross country team had a strong showing at the Northwood Invite on Saturday, highlighted by a top-10 individual finish and multiple personal bests.
Senior Elena Wheeler led the Wolverines with a stellar performance, clocking a personal-record time of 19:07.5 to place 7th overall in a deep field dominated by nationally ranked Findlay. Wheeler's effort marked UM-Dearborn's first top-10 individual finish of the season and set the tone for the team.
Freshman Valeria Miranda-Diaz impressed in her collegiate debut, crossing in 20:40.8 for 23rd place and second among UM-Dearborn runners. She was closely followed by senior Kaitlyn Bourque, who finished 28th with a time of 20:51.0.
Rounding out the Wolverines' scoring lineup were sophomore Itzel Huerta-Martinez (49th, 23:51.9) and junior Tariyah Dawson (53rd, 24:07.6). Freshman Elizabeth Lambert (56th, 25:21.8) added depth in her first collegiate 5K.
As a team, UM-Dearborn placed solidly in the standings against a mix of NCAA Division II, Division III, and junior college programs, showing promising progress early in the fall campaign.
The men's team was led by senior Brett Leidal, who cracked the top 35 in a highly competitive field stacked with NCAA Division II power Findlay and host Northwood.
Leidal ran 21:59.8, placing 32nd overall and scoring as the Wolverines' top finisher. He was followed closely by fellow senior Anderson Gattis, who posted a 22:17.4 for 36th place.
UM-Dearborn's pack was rounded out by senior Isaac Tiernan (49th, 23:15.6), junior John Borowicz (50th, 23:19.7), and senior Adam Haag (61st, 25:05.1).
The Wolverines finished with a team spread of just over three minutes among their top four scorers, showing consistency across their veteran group. Against a field dominated by Findlay's depth — the Oilers placed seven runners in the top 10 — and Northwood's home course advantage, UM-Dearborn battled well to gain early-season racing experience.
