LIMA, OHIO. (April 24, 2026) -- The University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team's season concluded on Friday as they dropped a pair of games against the University of Northwestern Ohio Racers.
In the opener, UM-Dearborn struck first in the second inning when Alex Schmitt delivered an RBI single to plate Nathan Deleruyelle, giving the Wolverines an early 1-0 advantage. The lead held until the third inning when Northwestern Ohio answered with a game-tying RBI triple from Fabian Romero.
The contest remained competitive into the middle innings behind a solid outing from starter Johnny Hesterman, who worked into the fifth. However, the Racers broke through in the bottom of the fifth, stringing together three consecutive RBI hits to take control. Romero's second extra-base hit of the game highlighted the rally as Northwestern Ohio built a 4-1 lead it would not relinquish.
Connor Swiney paced the Maize & Blue offense with a 2-for-2 performance, while Schmitt added two hits and the team's lone RBI. Despite drawing four walks, UM-Dearborn was unable to capitalize on additional scoring opportunities, leaving four runners on base.
In game two, Northwestern Ohio's offense proved overwhelming from the outset. The Racers plated three runs in the first inning and added three more in the second before erupting for a seven-run third inning to take a commanding 13-1 lead.
UM-Dearborn managed to break through in the second inning on a defensive miscue and later added four runs in the sixth. Lance Smith drove in two runs with a single, and Schmitt followed with a two-RBI knock to briefly cut into the deficit. However, Northwestern Ohio answered with seven more runs in the bottom half of the sixth to secure the run-rule victory.
Smith finished with two hits and two RBIs to lead the Wolverines, while Schmitt added a hit and two RBIs.
On the mound, five UM-Dearborn pitchers combined to allow 21 runs, with Noah Piesko taking the loss in the start.
