FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team split a high-scoring doubleheader with Defiance College on April 1 at The Hawk, dropping the opener 13-5 before responding with a 14-12 victory in game two.
Game 1: Defiance 13, Michigan-Dearborn 5
Defiance used a five-run second inning to seize early control and never looked back. Morgan Scott and Catherine Trebley each delivered RBI singles in the frame, while Allison Stinson capped the rally with a run-scoring hit that was aided by a defensive miscue.
Michigan-Dearborn answered in the third when Lindsay Marlewitz drove in two runs with a single to cut the deficit to 5-2, but the Yellow Jackets continued to apply pressure. Kaylee Heath and Emma Linn each homered as part of a 16-hit effort that produced runs in four of the final five innings.
Kendyl Gearhart highlighted the Wolverines offensively with a solo home run in the sixth, while Emma McAvoy added an RBI single later in the inning. Marlewitz finished with two RBI, accounting for nearly half of the team's production.
In the circle, Maegen Boehm took the loss after allowing eight runs over four innings, while Defiance's Madelyn Hopper earned the win.
Game 2: Michigan-Dearborn 14, Defiance 12
The Wolverines flipped the script in the nightcap, erupting for eight runs in the first inning to set the tone in a back-and-forth slugfest.
Kaleigh McClelland delivered the biggest blow early with a grand slam, and Sienna Potter and Claire Muehlbrandt followed with back-to-back home runs to quickly build an 8-1 advantage.
Defiance chipped away with multiple-run innings in the second and fourth, trimming the lead to one at 10-9, but Michigan-Dearborn responded. Katelyn Postuma came through with a two-run single in the fourth, and Kendyl Gearhart added an RBI knock to extend the lead.
Muehlbrandt and McClelland paced the offense with four RBI each, while Potter and McAvoy added multi-hit performances. The Wolverines drew 10 walks and totaled 12 hits in the win.
In the circle, Brooklynn Jones picked up the victory despite a challenging outing, combining with Boehm to limit further damage late. Boehm closed the door over the final 3.2 innings, striking out six to secure the split.
Michigan-Dearborn moves to 10-15 overall and 4-5 in WHAC play following the split.
