FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team delivered a pivotal Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) sweep on Wednesday, taking both games of a doubleheader against Lawrence Tech to move into fifth place in the conference standings.
The Wolverines showed resilience in the opener before riding timely hitting and strong pitching to a convincing win in game two, completing one of their most important conference showings of the season.
Michigan-Dearborn (14-15, 8-5 WHAC) opened the day with a dramatic 4-3 extra-inning victory. The Wolverines struck first in the opening inning on an RBI double from Lindsay Marlewitz and added single runs in the fourth and fifth, highlighted by a solo home run from Kendyl Gearhart.
Lawrence Tech rallied in the seventh with a three-run homer to even the score, but Michigan-Dearborn responded in the 10th inning. Braylin Grueter came around to score on Marlewitz's second RBI hit of the game, sealing the walk-off victory.
In the circle, Maegen Boehm delivered a complete-game effort, tossing all 10 innings while allowing just six hits and three runs to earn the win.
The Wolverines carried that momentum into game two, earning a 7-1 victory behind a four-run second inning that set the tone early. Michigan-Dearborn capitalized on timely hitting and pressure on the basepaths, plating runs on contributions from Kayla Finlaw, Elizabeth Petrella, LeStat Guthrie, and Braylin Grueter.
The Wolverines added three more runs in the fourth inning, with Grueter driving in another run and Marlewitz continuing her strong day at the plate with an RBI single.
Brooklynn Jones was dominant in the circle in the nightcap, going the distance while allowing just one run on five hits to secure the win.
Offensively, Michigan-Dearborn tallied 10 hits in game two, with Grueter leading the way with two RBIs, while multiple Wolverines contributed to a balanced attack.
With the sweep, Michigan-Dearborn gains valuable ground in the WHAC standings, positioning themselves firmly in the playoff race as the regular season continues.
