Dearborn, MI - Madonna University went undefeated in this weekend's Earlybird Collegiate Volleyball Tournament hosted by the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The Crusaders went a perfect 4-0 in winning all matches and also did not drop a set during their four matches. Their perfect weekend made them the champions over Grace College due to the fact that Grace, while winning all four matches, dropped two sets during the weekend.
The Wolverines went 0-4 over the weekend, losing two heart breakers in five sets. On Friday night, Michigan-Dearborn played Illinois Tech twice and got swept in the first match losing by scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-20. The Wolverines came out strong in the second match winning the first set 25-16. In the second set, Illinois Tech came back to win 26-24. After each team won convincingly in sets three and four, the Wolverines took a 13-9 lead in the fifth and deciding set, but failed to capitalize losing 19-17. On Saturday, St. Catharine swept Michigan-Dearborn 25-22, 25-20, and 25-10. In the final match of the tournament for the Wolverines, Spring Arbor University came back to win in five sets. The four loss weekend drops the Wolverines to 1-7 on the young season. The volleyball team will take the week off and jump back into action on September 6th when they to Earlham College Indiana for a weekend tournament.
Madonna University's Samantha Geile and Emilie Freeman headed the All-Tournament Team. Joining them were Nicole Wurstle from Point Park, Alyssa Frees of Spring Arbor, and Rachel Weaver from St. Francis University Indiana. To see game-by-game results from the tournament, please click below.
