Late Push Falls Short as Wolverines Drop Road Contest at Lawrence Tech
A strong second-half surge wasn’t enough for the University of Michigan-Dearborn men’s lacrosse team, as the Wolverines fell 16-12 to Lawrence Tech on Saturday afternoon in WHAC play.
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The University of Michigan-Dearborn lacrosse team (6-8, 3-6 WHAC) showed resilience throughout, particularly in the third quarter, but an early deficit and a decisive fourth quarter from Lawrence Tech proved to be the difference.
The Blue Devils came out fast, opening the game on a 7-3 run in the first quarter behind a dominant performance from Brendan Shinavier. Despite early goals from Shane Marion, Wyatt Potter, and Jeremy Fancett, the Wolverines found themselves chasing the game early.
UM-Dearborn settled in during the middle quarters, trading goals in the second before turning in one of their strongest stretches of the afternoon in the third. Reece Rath scored twice in the frame, while Aidan Meyers added a goal in the closing seconds to cap a 3-0 run that pulled the Wolverines within one at 9-8 entering the fourth.
Lawrence Tech responded quickly in the final quarter, opening on a 7-0 run to regain control and extend the lead to 16-8. The Wolverines continued to battle, closing the game with four goals in the final two minutes, including tallies from Rath, Dylan Thorpe, and Charlie Woodcock, but the late push came up short.
Rath led the Wolverines offensively with three goals, while Thorpe added a strong all-around performance with two goals and three assists. Fancett and Meyers each contributed two goals, and Woodcock chipped in a goal and an assist.
UM-Dearborn finished with a 51-37 advantage in shots and matched Lawrence Tech with 40 ground balls, but faceoff struggles and the fourth-quarter run proved costly.
