Late Surge Not Enough as Wolverines Fall at Rochester Christian
A fast-paced, high-scoring contest slipped away late as the University of Michigan–Dearborn women’s basketball team was outpaced in the fourth quarter, falling on the road to Rochester Christian on Saturday afternoon.
ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. -- The University of Michigan–Dearborn women's basketball team dropped a 71–54 decision to Rochester Christian on Jan. 31, as a strong third-quarter push by the home team created separation that the Wolverines were unable to overcome.
UM-Dearborn stayed competitive early, trading baskets throughout the opening quarter before trailing 16–9 after one. The Wolverines found more offensive rhythm in the second quarter, scoring 10 points and tightening things defensively, but Rochester Christian maintained its edge and carried a 23–19 lead into halftime.
The turning point came in the third quarter, when Rochester Christian erupted for 32 points. Despite UM-Dearborn answering with 14 points of its own, the pace and efficiency of the home side widened the gap heading into the final period.
The Wolverines continued to fight in the fourth quarter, putting up 21 points—nearly matching their entire first-half output—but Rochester Christian responded with 16 points to close out the 71–54 final.
Marissa Thomas led UM-Dearborn with 16 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting from the field, while Tamia Tounsel added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Lillian Golson provided a spark off the bench, scoring eight points in just 15 minutes, and Nyla Hood chipped in five points and three assists.
UM-Dearborn shot 38.5 percent from the field and was limited to 1-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc, while Rochester Christian capitalized on perimeter looks and finished at 29.2 percent from three-point range. The Wolverines also battled foul trouble throughout the game, committing 23 turnovers that led to transition opportunities for the home team.
With the loss, UM-Dearborn moved to 14–8 overall and 13–3 in conference play, as the Wolverines look to regroup and carry their late-game offensive momentum into the next stretch of the season.
