Hot-Shooting Cornerstone Pulls Away from UM-Dearborn, 76-55
Despite a strong individual effort from Lillian Golson and a competitive fourth quarter, the University of Michigan-Dearborn fell to Cornerstone University, 76-55, on Wednesday night.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Cornerstone (12-13, 10-9) used efficient shooting and balanced scoring to defeat the University of Michigan-Dearborn (4-21, 2-17) women's basketball team in WHAC play. The Golden Eagles shot 53.8 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point range, building steady separation throughout the contest.
UM-Dearborn struggled offensively from the opening tip. The Wolverines shot 32.8 percent from the floor and 55 percent from the free throw line, converting just 11 of 20 attempts at the stripe. After trailing 23-16 at the end of the first quarter, UM-Dearborn managed only eight points in the second, heading into halftime down 37-24.
Cornerstone maintained control in the third quarter, outscoring the Wolverines 19-11 to extend the margin to 21 points entering the final period. Both teams scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, but the deficit proved too large to overcome.
Lillian Golson led UM-Dearborn with 15 points on an efficient 5-of-9 shooting performance, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Marissa Thomas added 14 points and six rebounds, while Tamia Tounsel contributed 10 points and three boards. The Wolverines collected 31 total rebounds but were outmatched on the glass, 37-31, and committed 19 turnovers.
Cornerstone was paced by Jaxi Long's game-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Gracie Gortmaker provided a strong lift off the bench with 19 points, four steals and two blocks, while Abby Hall added 16 points, knocking down four three-pointers. Julie Ashbaugh chipped in 14 points as the Golden Eagles placed four players in double figures.
The Wolverines recorded eight steals and limited Cornerstone to 17 turnovers but were unable to consistently generate offensive momentum against the Golden Eagles' efficient half-court execution.
