DEARBORN, Mich. — The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's hockey team put on an offensive showcase over the weekend, scoring a combined 18 goals to sweep a home-and-home series against Rochester Christian (Mich.) on Friday and Saturday.
The Wolverines rolled to a 13-3 win on Friday night at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena before following up with a 5-2 victory on the road Saturday in Mt. Clemens. The sweep moves UM-Dearborn to 6-6-0 overall and 6-4-0 in WHAC play.
Michigan-Dearborn wasted no time establishing control Friday night, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the opening period and never looking back.
Sophomore Zak Januszkowski opened the scoring on a power play just over six minutes in, while Bailey Byrd and Jamieson Franz added goals to make it 3-0 after the first.
The Wolverines erupted for five goals in the second period, including a stretch of three shorthanded tallies in just over a minute. Joey Cibor netted two of those and assisted on another, leading a relentless penalty kill unit that outscored Rochester Christian's power play.
Januszkowski, Byrd, and Caleb Cathcart also scored in the second, with Cathcart's goal coming on the power play.
UM-Dearborn added five more in the third, including goals from Will Barrett, Max Hartwell, Brenden Paden, and Byrd again, while Adam Czarnik capped the night with a shorthanded goal in the final minute.
Cibor led all scorers with five points (2G, 3A), while Cathcart (1G, 3A), Hartwell (1G, 2A), and Barrett (1G, 2A) each had multi-point nights. Goaltender Trevor Heslop stopped 23 of 26 shots to earn the win.
UM-Dearborn outshot the Warriors 49-26 and went 4-for-6 on the power play, while also scoring four shorthanded goals.
The Wolverines carried the momentum into Saturday's rematch, grinding out a 5-2 win behind another strong performance from Joey Cibor, who scored twice—including a late power-play goal to seal the victory.
Ryan Teets and Cibor scored early to give UM-Dearborn a 2-1 lead after one, and after a scoreless second period, the Wolverines took over in the third.
Max Hartwell scored on the power play, Connor Hasse added an even-strength tally, and Cibor's second goal in the closing minute put the game away.
Jake Emery tallied two assists, while Will Barrett and Matt Cunningham each added helpers.
Freshman goaltender Isaac Kolasa earned his first win of the season, stopping 15 of 17 shots in a composed effort.
UM-Dearborn again controlled the offensive zone, outshooting Rochester Christian 40-17 and converting two power-play goals on six opportunities.
