An explosive first period set the tone as the University of Michigan–Dearborn men’s ice hockey team unleashed a relentless offensive attack Friday night, rolling past Rochester Christian with authority in Mt. Clemens.
ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. -- The University of Michigan–Dearborn men's ice hockey team delivered a dominant performance on Jan. 30, overwhelming Rochester Christian 13–1 behind balanced scoring, constant pressure, and a four-goal opening period.
UM-Dearborn wasted little time seizing control. After breaking the ice at 15:20 of the first period on a goal from Caleb Cathcart, the Wolverines erupted for four goals in just over four minutes. Cathcart struck again 35 seconds later, followed by goals from Zak Januszkowski and Brenden Paden to give UM-Dearborn a commanding 4–0 lead after one.
The offensive surge continued in the second period. Bailey Byrd scored unassisted at 8:44 before Rochester Christian briefly got on the board midway through the frame. Any momentum was short-lived, as Carter Allen and Ryan Teets answered with back-to-back goals late in the period, sending the Wolverines into the third with a 7–1 advantage.
UM-Dearborn saved its biggest push for last, pouring in six goals in the final 20 minutes. Will Barrett opened the scoring early in the third, and Teets followed with two more tallies to complete his hat trick. Matt Cunningham, Byrd, and Cathcart—who also finished with a hat trick—rounded out the scoring in a relentless third-period display.
The Wolverines dominated every facet of the game, outshooting Rochester Christian 77–19 and rolling four different lines throughout the night. Paden led all players with six points on a goal and five assists, while Joey Cibor chipped in three helpers.
In goal, Isaac Kolasa was steady for UM-Dearborn, stopping 18 of 19 shots to earn the win as the Wolverines improved to 13–12–1 overall and 10–7 in conference play.
With scoring coming from throughout the lineup and no penalties assessed to either team, UM-Dearborn showcased its depth and discipline in one of its most complete performances of the season.
