ALLEN PARK, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team earned a weekend split with WHAC opponent Cleary University, winning 6-3 at home Friday night before falling 3-1 on the road Saturday.
In Friday's home opener at the Allen Park Ice Arena, the Wolverines came out firing, scoring twice in the opening period. David Dell got things started midway through the first, finishing off assists from Adam Czarnik and Ryan Teets, before Will Barrett doubled the lead less than three minutes later.
Michigan-Dearborn (1-2-1, 1-1-0 WHAC) carried the momentum into the second, as Caleb Cathcart extended the lead with a power-play goal just 46 seconds in. Barrett struck again later in the frame, making it 4-0 before Cleary answered with two goals to stay within reach.
The Wolverines sealed the win in the third behind special teams excellence. Brenden Paden scored on the power play early in the period, while Cathcart added a short-handed goal to cap off a two-goal night. Max Hartwell tallied two assists, and Paden added three points (1G, 2A). Goalie Trevor Heslop earned the win with 18 saves.
On Saturday in Howell, Cleary (3-1-0, 1-1-0 WHAC) responded with a strong defensive effort to even the series. The Cougars scored twice in the opening six minutes and held the Wolverines scoreless until the third period.
Barrett provided the lone goal for Michigan-Dearborn, finding the back of the net unassisted midway through the final frame, but an empty-net tally in the closing minutes sealed the 3-1 result for Cleary.
Despite the loss, the Wolverines battled hard — outshooting Cleary 32-41 and generating multiple late scoring chances. Goaltender Isaac Kolasa was outstanding in his season debut, stopping 38 of 40 shots.
