Wolverines Blank Eastern Michigan, 4–0, Behind Special Teams and Suffocating Defense
A scoreless first period gave way to total control as the University of Michigan–Dearborn women’s ice hockey team leaned on its power play, depth scoring, and a flawless night in goal to shut out Eastern Michigan on Friday evening in Dearborn.
DEARBORN, Mich. -- The University of Michigan–Dearborn women's ice hockey team earned a convincing 4–0 victory over Eastern Michigan on Jan. 30 at the Dearborn Ice Skating Center, using relentless offensive pressure and disciplined defensive play to pull away after a tight opening frame.
After a scoreless first period that saw UM-Dearborn outshoot Eastern Michigan 18–5, the Wolverines broke through midway through the second. Nicole Hahn opened the scoring at 7:40 of the period with an unassisted power-play goal, capitalizing on one of Eastern Michigan's many trips to the penalty box.
UM-Dearborn doubled its lead late in the second when Pallavi Hari finished a well-worked play at 19:02, taking feeds from Grace Taylor and Cadence Pero to make it 2–0 heading into the intermission.
The Wolverines kept their foot on the gas in the third period. Megan Kosempel extended the lead at 15:20, burying a shot off an assist from Andi Evers. Just over three minutes later, Evers capped the scoring with a power-play goal at 18:51, set up by Stephanie Hatch, sealing the 4–0 result.
UM-Dearborn dominated the shot column all night, outshooting Eastern Michigan 72–16, and consistently kept play in the offensive zone. The Wolverines also made the most of their chances on special teams, finishing 2-for-10 on the power play.
In net, Kenna Borso was perfect, stopping all 16 shots she faced to earn the shutout and improve her record to 14–3 on the season.
